LGBTQ+ History Month 2023

At Family Fostering Partners, we encourage all our foster parents and staff to be their true authentic selves. This month, in recognition and celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month, we would like to debunk some of the myths about fostering as an LGBTQ+ person.

Our aim is that the foster parents we support and train are as diverse as the children in their care. We champion diversity within families, and know better than anybody that the cliché of ‘Mum, Dad and 2.5 kids’ is not a true representation of most families today!

We support and train foster parents from all the walks of life with differing backgrounds and experiences. These differences are what makes each foster parent unique, and with careful matching, we can ensure the best possible futures for the children in our care. We match your skills and experience, and train you where needed, to ensure you have the toolkit to look after a child.

Currently, LGBTQ+ people make up 6.5% of foster parents at Family Fostering Partners. 1 in 6 adoptions in England in 2020 were to same-sex couples, unfortunately, we do not have that same data for foster parents. One thing that we know for certain is that your gender identity or sexual orientation has no impact on your ability to offer a stable and loving home for a vulnerable child.

Can I foster as an LGBTQ+ person?

The simple answer is YES, you can. If you have the time, love and commitment to offer a child, then we would love to hear from you.

Can I foster if I am transgender?

If you have the room in your heart and home, then your gender does not determine your suitability to foster. We would love to hear from you.

Can I foster with my partner, even if we are not married or in a civil partnership?

Yes, if you apply as a couple, you will be assessed as a couple. You do not need to be married, but you do need to be in a committed relationship to be assessed together.

Is the application process the same?

Yes, the application process is exactly the same. Please click here to find out more….

Can single people from the LGBTQ+ community foster?

Yes, you absolutely can foster if you are single. We have a number of fantastic single foster parents at Family Fostering Partners, and the work they do is absolutely invaluable. Quite literally life changing!
