When any child enters foster care in Wales, they may bring with them a history of trauma, loss, or instability. At Family Fostering Partners, as an Independent Fostering Agency in Wales, we understand that creative outlets can play a vital role in helping children to process their emotions, build confidence, and develop essential life skills. One such outlet that has proven particularly effective is pottery. This hands-on, sensory-rich activity offers a therapeutic way for children in foster care in Wales to heal and grow. For our recent team building day, we decided to try it for ourselves…
Last week, we had the opportunity to attend a Pottery Making Class with Cwtch Pottery to discover for ourselves the therapeutic benefits of crafting for mindfulness and wellbeing. Emma, our teacher, showed us the different ways to shape and mould clay, and we cannot wait to see our finished creations once they’ve been fired!
As an Independent Fostering Agency in Wales, we are dedicated to providing the best possible foster care in Wales; understanding the importance of supporting our foster parents well in order for them to provide the best possible care. From support groups, crafting workshops or mindfulness sessions, we are always looking for new and engaging ways to incorporate mindfulness and wellbeing into our practice.
As we experienced first-hand, pottery is more than just a fun activity—it’s a powerful therapeutic tool. Here’s how it can help children in foster care in Wales:
Many children in foster care in Wales struggle with expressing or understanding their emotions. The rhythmic nature of pottery—kneading, shaping, and moulding—can help quiet the mind, allowing children to focus on the present moment. This mindful engagement can reduce anxiety and improve emotional regulation, helping children feel more in control of their feelings.
Creating something from scratch provides a tangible sense of achievement. For children in foster care in Wales, who may have faced rejection or instability, completing a pottery project instils a sense of pride and self-worth. Seeing their work displayed or gifted to others can reinforce feelings of accomplishment and belonging.
Pottery involves touch, texture, and movement. The hands-on nature of working with clay strengthens fine motor skills and coordination while also providing a calming sensory experience.
Some children in foster care in Wales find it challenging to articulate their emotions. Pottery allows them to express themselves in a non-verbal way, using shapes, textures, and designs to communicate feelings they may struggle to put into words.
