Questions About Foster Care Jobs You’ve Always Wanted to Ask

At Family Fostering Partners, we know that becoming a foster carer is a big decision, and before embarking on the journey to become a foster parent, it’s important to have your questions answered. Here are some of the questions people ask us most often about foster care jobs.

What makes a good foster carer?

There’s no single “perfect” type of foster carer. Great foster carers come from all walks of life; different ages, backgrounds, and experiences. What they all share are qualities such as patience, resilience, empathy, and a commitment to making a positive difference in a child’s life.

You don’t need to have parenting experience, own your home, or be in a relationship to foster. What matters most is that you can offer a safe, stable, and nurturing environment where a child feels valued and supported.

What are the most important parts of a foster carer’s roles and responsibilities?

Fostering is more than just providing a roof over someone’s head. Your responsibilities include:

  • Meeting a child’s emotional and physical needs
  • Helping with education and encouraging aspirations
  • Maintaining contact with birth families (where appropriate)
  • Working as part of a team with social workers, schools, and other professionals
  • Providing stability during difficult times

Foster carers play a vital role in helping children requiring foster care feel safe and secure, and in turn, we support our foster parents so they are able to provide this important care.

What is the biggest challenge in foster care jobs?

The truth is, challenges in fostering look different for everyone. For some foster parents, adjustments to homelife can be a challenge at first, whilst for others, keeping up with paperwork or meetings can be difficult. Whatever difficulties you face, you’ll never be alone. At Family Fostering Partners, we provide ongoing training, 24/7 support, and guidance to help you manage every aspect of the role with confidence.

Many of our foster carers tell us that while fostering can be demanding at times, it’s also the most rewarding thing they’ve ever done.
