Supporting the Young Carer awards

Family Fostering Partners is excited to be a part of the Young Achievers Awards which are being organised and promoted by Radio Carmarthenshire and Scarlet FM throughout October.

The Young Achiever Awards are a great way of celebrating the achievements of young people across Carmarthenshire, recognising and rewarding their contribution to their communities. We are sponsoring the Young Carer category, which although not related to fostering, is a caring cause close to our hearts.

A young carer is someone aged 18 or under who helps look after a relative who has a condition, such as a disability, illness, mental health condition, or a drug or alcohol problem. Most young carers look after one of their parents or care for a brother or sister. They also do extra jobs around the home, such as cooking, cleaning, or helping someone to get dressed and move around. Some people start caring at a very young age and don't really realise they are carers.

These wonderful children often forego their childhood and can end up struggling at school as they try to juggle everything they need to fit into their day. Society needs to recognise that children should not be fulfilling this need without support, if they should be doing it at all. By sponsoring this award we hope to help raise awareness of the plight of young carers in the hope that they will eventually receive the support they deserve. We salute these exceptional children who should serve as an inspiration to others.
By contrast to the young carers referred to above, foster carers receive excellent professional support and training to help them deliver high standards of care, plus they have their life experiences to draw on to help them transform the life of a vulnerable child.

The awards ceremony will be taking place in on 22nd October at The Diplomat Hotel Llanelli.

We look forward to telling you about our winner!
