What Checks Are Done to Become a Foster Parent?

Have you ever wondered what checks and references are undertaken in order to become a foster parent? At Family Fostering Partners, we answer all questions about fostering with openness and honesty – here’s our response to ‘what checks are done to become a foster parent’.

  1. Background and DBS Checks

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is one of the first steps. Everyone in your household aged 18 or over will also need to complete one. We will also contact the local authorities or if you have lived abroad, the embassy’s where you have lived to ask if they hold any information which may mean you’re unable to foster.

  1. Medical Assessment

You’ll need a medical assessment from your GP to confirm you’re well enough to foster. You don’t have to be in perfect health - agencies like Family Fostering Partners just need to know you can meet a child’s needs safely and consistently.

  1. References

You’ll be asked for references from people who know you well such as friends, family, and employers. These references help to paint a full picture of your character, stability, and suitability to care for children.

  1. Home Safety Checks

Your home doesn’t need to be big, but it should be safe and welcoming. A social worker will visit to make sure your home meets safety standards and advise on any changes that might need to be made – for example, if you’re looking to foster younger children, stair gates may be required.

At Family Fostering Partners, your assessing social worker will guide you through any small adjustments that may be needed.

  1. The Form F Assessment and Panel

Whilst these checks are undertaken, you will meet regularly with your assessing social worker who will complete a ‘Form F Assessment’ with you. Together you’ll explore your experiences, motivation to foster, and understanding of children’s needs. When this is complete, your application goes to an independent fostering panel, who make a recommendation on your approval.

The checks to become a foster parent are there to protect children -but they’re also designed to help you feel prepared, confident, and supported in your future role.
