Therapeutic Foster Care

Fostering a child is a wonderful thing to do. It brings joy to your life as you learn from and enjoy time spent with a foster child, but it also makes a valuable and important difference to the child’s life. Foster care is a way to improve young peoples life chances, help them build a better future, and ultimately enjoy a happier life!

Their future is dependent on good, loving and nurturing care. That’s why Family Fostering Partners is an attachment-focused agency. Attachment theory states that strong relationships with caregivers form the primary foundation for brain development and all forms of future development to blossom. Having a stable, dependable and strong relationship with a caregiver allows that child to have a sense of security as a basis for learning and developing further.

This type of stable relationship is extremely important in all children’s lives. However, it is especially important for foster children who may have experienced traumatic events early in their life. Children enter the care system for many different reasons ranging from family breakdown or illness to neglect or abuse. No matter what the reason, leaving one’s birth family and moving to a different home is a traumatic experience for any child and these difficult early experiences often make it extremely hard for the young person to form strong bonds with those around them. Children may be withdrawn and suffer low confidence and self-esteem, this can sometimes result in behavioural issues as they struggle to manage their feelings and emotions.

Therefore, the right type of care is extremely important in aiding the transition to a foster home and making sure you are providing a place for them to learn, grow and develop. Therapeutic foster care focuses on providing a safe and stable environment and a strong support system around the child so that they can feel secure and start to rebuild their confidence and trust in people.

Family Fostering Partners provide a dedicated training programme to help our foster parents understand the importance of therapeutic care and how to practice it within their own homes. Our core training programme covers attachment theory and managing behaviour as well as other important elements of care including safeguarding and health. We will always work with you as a team with the interests of the young person at the heart of everything we do. Each child will have a specific, tailored care plan to ensure that their needs are fully catered for and in the best interest of their individual circumstance.

Our goal is always to build positive, safe, nurturing and loving relationships between children and foster parents, and as an agency, we will do whatever it takes to facilitate that including training, support, advice and guidance!
